ARA
Jamestown;
For your letter of 19th July you acknowledged receipt of the "accounts, but it seems that the Papers miscarried and reached the Colonial Office
I was in hope that Mr. Rennieker might, as directed, give on his arrival in London, some clue to the accident;
but I regret to Say that Mr. Rennieker's health, on his departure hence, rendered it doubtful if he could survive to reach Europe
I should much desire to see the address on the package which presumably contained the Papers that count as vouchers, as this might throw some light on the matter. At present the above explanation is all I can afford.
With reference to the lists of missing Invoices and Abstracts, given in your letter under reply, I beg to say that Copies of the Duplicates shall be forwarded as may be
I do not as yet think that it will be necessary to mark double copies of the Books wanting, and that, for this purpose, the Treasury Commissioners have requested extra assistance, which His Excellency the Governor has consented to allow.
We trust therefore, with as little delay as practicable, to furnish these accounts in proper form, and that no similar accidents may happen in future.
(Signed) W.J. Mercer,
Colonial Secretary.
